UK Launch of the HTC First is put on hold

HTC FirstIf you’ve been looking forward to getting your hands on the HTC First, also known as the Facebook Phone, then EE and Facebook have some bad news – its UK launch has been put on indefinite hold. The HTC First is already on sale in the US, as an exclusive with the AT&T network, and was expected to come to EE – where it would connect to it’s 4G network – during the summer.

However, a statement from EE has been published by tech site Engadget, following a rumour report by MobileNews early yesterday, saying Facebook has recommended EE hold off releasing the First, while it works on improving Facebook Home.

Facebook Home is the launcher app which comes pre-installed on the HTC First, but is also available as a standalone app which can be downloaded for a select few devices from Google Play. Facebook states, “customer feedback” is the reason for the First’s UK cancellation, indicating it’s aware Home needs some work. We reviewed Facebook Home on the Galaxy S III recently and found it to be a flawed experience as it obscures so much of the Android operating system, it makes everything except Facebook rather awkward and annoying to use.

EE will be contacting anyone who has pre-ordered the HTC First over the coming weeks, but for now, anyone who wants the Facebook Home experience here in the UK will need a phone compatible with the launcher app. This list currently includes the aforementioned Galaxy S3, plus the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S4, HTC One, HTC One X, One X+ and the Sony Xperia ZL

Galaxy S4 reaches 10 million within it’s first month

SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 HITS 10 MILLION MILESTONE IN FIRST MONTHGalaxy S4

Four Galaxy S4 smartphones sold every second

London, UK – May 23, 2013 – Samsung Electronics today announced that global channel sales of its Galaxy S4, a life companion for a richer, fuller, simpler life, has surpassed 10 million units sold in less than one month after its commercial debut. Launched globally on April 27, the phone is estimated to be selling at a rate of four units per second.

The Galaxy S4 sets a new record for Samsung, generating sales quicker than any of its predecessors. Sales of the Galaxy S III reached the 10-million mark 50 days after its launch in 2012, while the Galaxy S II took five months and the Galaxy S seven months to reach the same milestone.

“On behalf of Samsung, I would like to thank the millions of customers around the world who have chosen the Samsung Galaxy S4. At Samsung we’ll continue to pursue innovation inspired by and for people,” said JK Shin, CEO and President of the IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics.

The Galaxy S4 was developed to enhance the meaningful moments in our lives through its innovative features and superior hardware. It has the world’s first Full HD Super AMOLED display that showcases images at their very best on a 5-inch screen with 441ppi. Equipped with a powerful rear 13MP camera, the Galaxy S4 also boasts a Dual Camera function that allows simultaneous use of both front and rear cameras. The Galaxy S4’s new and innovative software features include Air View and Air Gesture for effortless tasks, while it also keeps people up-to-date with information about their health and wellbeing using S Health.

Samsung Galaxy S4 is available in more than 110 countries and will gradually be rolled out to a total of 155 countries in cooperation with 327 partners. Samsung is planning to introduce more colour variations to meet various consumer tastes and preferences. In addition to the currently available White Mist and Black Forest, new colour iterations will be added this summer, including Blue Arctic and Red Aurora, followed by Purple Mirage and Brown Autumn. UK availability on these colour variations is to be confirmed.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 BECOMES WORLD’S FIRST TCO CERTIFIED SMARTPHONE

Award recognises the sustainable qualities of newly released flagship handset

London, UK – May 16, 2013 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that the Samsung Galaxy S4 is TCO Certified, the first smartphone to be awarded such an honour. TCO Development, an independent body that focuses on sustainability in the IT industry, found the Galaxy S4 was sustainably designed and manufactured and met customer demand for sustainable mobile products.

“The demand for environmentally friendly products informed our decision making process when we were creating the Galaxy S4. We are delighted to be the first smartphone manufacturer to be TCO Certified as this validates our approach to sustainability,” said JK Shin, CEO & President, IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics. “This is the second significant certificate the Galaxy S4 has received since its release as we were also awarded Platinum ECOLOGO certification from UL. Our customers can trust that every device we release to the market is sustainable and environmentally friendly.”

To become TCO Certified a smartphone must meet requirements across a variety of criteria including social, environmental and economic viability. In the social category, Samsung demonstrated that it is committed to socially responsible manufacturing and is compliant with International Labour Organization and United Nation conventions. In the environmental category, it was found that the Galaxy S4 was free from many hazardous materials such as nickel, beryllium, and mercury which, if present, would have severely restricted its potential to be recycled at the end its lifecycle. In terms of economic viability, the power efficiency of the charger was praised, as was the smartphone’s industrial design which boosts reliability.

“TCO Certified Smartphones are designed to make it easier for smartphone buyers to choose products that have been designed with sustainability in mind. By certifying their smartphones, leading brands such as Samsung have a real opportunity to demonstrate that their products are helping advance more sustainable mobile solutions,” said Sören Enholm, CEO TCO Development.
